Rochdale Theatre

theatre poster & visual identity

  • A visual identity was developed for Rochdale, a seasonal theatre production at Toronto Film School.

Set in 1969, the play explores the rise and fall of Rochdale College — Toronto’s radical experiment in cooperative living and alternative education.

Deliverables included an 11x17” poster, digital promotional graphics, and a multi-page event program.

  • The story centers on the tension between idealism and reality — a utopian vision that gradually unravels into political conflict and chaos.

The challenge was to capture the cultural intensity of the late 1960s while visually expressing both freedom and instability. The design needed to feel era-specific without becoming purely nostalgic or decorative.

  • Inspired by late-1960s psychedelic design, the identity features layered typography, fluid forms, and saturated gem-toned colours.

The iconic “Unknown Student” statue serves as a visual anchor, grounding the expressive composition in historical context. Bold colour contrasts and dynamic movement reflect the optimism, rebellion, and eventual fragmentation at the heart of the story.

The result balances expressive energy with structured composition — echoing the play’s narrative arc from radical idealism to collapse.
